Airlie Gardens Wilmington NC
My favorite place to photograph families is Airlie Gardens Wilmington NC. Because there’s no sand? Maybe! Spanning over 60 acres, Airlie is nestled next to Bradley Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway. As a result, it’s large expanse allows you the feeling that you have the entire place to yourself, even on it’s busiest days. Take a walk through the gardens with me.Not only does it provide you with seasonal blooms and live oaks but also waterfront views.
Given that 500 year old Southern Live Oak stands tall in the lawn, it provides quite a bit of shade. The oak is draped in Spanish moss and surrounded by bright pink azaleas in the Spring. Therefore creating the perfect backdrop for any family photo. The lawn surrounding it is wide open and often lined with seasonal blooms. For the most part it is one of the most spacious areas of the gardens. Therefore the perfect space for little ones to run around and explore.
The grassy aisle is filled with brightly colored tulips on either side in the spring. For this reason it was given the nickname, the Bridal Walk. Because of the tall oaks and various hard woods that line the way, there is plenty of shade on hot summer days. Not only will the Bridal Walk lead you to the jasmine covered pergola but you will find a calming fountain overlooking Airlie Lake at the end. By all means sit and stay a while in this beautiful place. Further in the distance you can often see two swans swimming side by side.
Centennial Plaza & the Butterfly House
This area is filled with jasmine covered columns and a beautiful fountain. In other words, it provides a calm, peaceful feeling as you walk through this tranquil garden. For this reason, I end most sessions here as it allows a nice break for everyone. The Butterfly House is an open air building located in the Tranquility Gardens. Obviously in the summer it is filled with butterflies native to North Carolina and as a result it is only open seasonly.
Spring Garden at Airlie Gardens Wilmington NC
The Spring Garden is farthest from the entrance and as a result it is often unseen. It’s filled with wild flowers, azaleas, and flowering trees, in the spring. Therefore one of the best locations for photos. Moreover, it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the gardens in my opinion.

Airlie is a non-profit organization. Therefore, its mission is to preserve the gardens as an outstanding, historic public garden. As a result, they provide cultural and environmental programs to serve and educate its visitors. Airlie charges a $100 portrait fee for this reason. But it’s well worth the added expense.
In conclusion, Airlie Gardens is absolutely the best location to plan your family photos. Particularly if you are looking for a spot with more flowers than sand.
