Why they are so important to document.
Babies change and grow almost overnight. Which is one reason why baby milestones are so important. When you’re expecting your child it seems that the day you meet them couldn’t come soon enough. And then you blink and your baby is in your arms, sleepy and snuggly. You blink again and he’s crawling. Dare you blink once more, and she is walking across the living room.
Babies grow and change seemingly every day within their first year. And Milestone sessions paint a more complete picture of how both your baby and your family have grown through a year full of firsts. And each monthly milestone comes with its own firsts.
Please note that as I discuss these milestones, every baby is different and reaches these physical and mental milestones at different times and not all within their first twelve months. And that’s okay because as Maya Angelous says, “all great achievements require time.”
At three and six month sessions I focus on tummy time, especially if Baby isn’t sitting on it’s own just yet. I love getting that sweet moment when your son raises his upper body with his role polly arms to lift his head to see what’s going on around him. As you interact with your child at these ages, they have begun reacting more to you, laughing, smiling, cooing creating a beautiful moment to be captured between the two of you.
Some of my favorite photos are the ones of Baby grabbing her chunky baby toes with those dimply hands and smiling that big gummy grin at the shear delight of doing so. What an achievement!

At twelve months anything could happen. Some babies are practically running and others are completely content scooting, crawling, or being carried. I just think they know a good thing when they have it. For this reason, I should suggest photographing your one year old at home where they know their surroundings and are confident in whatever physical milestone they have reached.
However, if we choose an outdoor location, I suggest a wide open space with more solid ground. The beach is fun and beautiful, yes, but often when Baby finds her independence and her legs, she takes to the sand like an overly confident, boozed-up old man, pushing away assistance and blubbering no as they face plant into the dunes. It’s funny because it’s true. 😉
And then you, Mama! You have changed so much over that year. You survived, or are perhaps still surviving, sleep deprivation and months of worrying that you’re doing the wrong thing. Let me tell you right now that that is a lie and you are doing the very best you can. I would even say you’re killin’ it! Go you!

Each milestone comes with its own growth in the relationship you are building and nurturing with this tiny human. As they begin interacting and reacting, your reactions change, your behavior changes to meet them where they are. And these things may seem purely mental and emotional but they are also physical and portraits of these moments and the beautiful reactions to each other during these early days are priceless.
