During this week of thanksgiving I wanted to shine a spotlight on an incredible non-profit organization who’s mission to empower individuals in our community in need of jobs is something we should all be thankful for. Phoenix Hometown Hires strives to bring employment opportunities, training, and hope to men and women in need throughout the Cape Fear area. They help participants reach their potential and lead stable lives through satisfying work. Only one job away from reaching their year end goal of 100 jobs, they have successfully placed 99 participants so far this year!
Participants of Phoenix Hometown Hires begin with a week long Employment Training Workshop where they learn skills needed to find and sustain employment. Some of these skills include resume writing, time management, conflict resolution, and interview preparation. Volunteers give their time to conduct mock interviews, aid in resume writing, and even giving a participant a ride to an interview. Volunteers are a vital part of Phoenix Hometown Hires. The staff and its participants are always grateful for their time and support.
These dapper gentleman are completing the two week Job Program where they receive job readiness training and job placement assistance.
Before the mock interviews begin each participant shares what it is they want to get out of the interview training, what they feel are their weaknesses. What they learn, however, is to always focus on your strengths.
Honest, encouraging feedback is given to the participants after a mock interview is complete.
To aid in creating stability in all aspects of a participants life, they move to Life Skills training where they learn budgeting, goal-setting, credit restoration, relationship development, just to name a few. A staff case manager and volunteer are paired with a participant to give even more support to inspire lasting change.
The evening begins with participants sharing new of employment, accomplishments during the week, and even struggles. The love and support is endless here.
Phoenix provides participants with dinner and child care during training.
Congratulations to those participants who have recently graduated from the program! The time I spent with the staff, volunteers, and participants of Phoenix Hometown Hires was inspiring and eye-opening. When you are looking for volunteer opportunities this holiday season consider PHH. You may find that you want to give of your time well after the Christmas tree and twinkling lights are taken down. Your time and love would truly be a gift that keeps on giving.
