I get asked all the time if I offer mini sessions and the answer is ‘heck yeah’! I only host them twice a year, in the spring and early winter, just in time for Mother’s Day and the holidays. The very first year I offered minis it rained all day and I did not have a backup plan (rookie mistake). I then had to reschedule 12 mini sessions over the course of a two week period. My clients were awesome about it but that was not the experience I wanted for them. So I changed things up this year!
I rented the gorgeous space at Station No. 2 located at the corner of Castle and 5th Streets. With exposed brick walls, white trim, and beautiful natural light it provided the perfect backdrop for my families. If you know my work, you know that I like to keep things simple. I don’t use use props or overly decorated backdrops. In fact, I trimmed a few trees and bushes in my backyard the day before and my incredibly talented mama hung them around the main entrance to give a little extra depth and color. All my clients needed to bring were their smiles. When you’re as cute as these families who’s looking at the backdrop anyway?
What I love about mini sessions is that not only do I have returning friends like the Rhoads family below, but I get to meet new friends as well. I met the Simmons family, pictured above, when I was looking for newborn models for my commercial work. Hannah brought Elliott Mae and it was love at first sight. Look at that tiny, beautiful smile!
Mini sessions aren’t for everyone or every subject. For instance I don’t offer mini newborn sessions because these take time. I don’t rush newborns or new parents. I allot a certain period of time for these so that everyone is comfortable and content to create the best images possible.
I met Becky and Tyler for the first time when they arrived at Station No. 2 that morning. They are expecting their first child and I was lucky enough to be the first to know! They wanted these photos to send not only as holiday cards but also to announce their exciting news to family and friends. Are they not the cutest?! I think we talked for the first ten minutes of their 15 minute session. Becky and I may or may not be best friends now! 🙂
The Mauers are also new to the LH Photo family. Sarah and Tyler are expecting their second little one next year so we were able to get some great family shots with their son Eli (future Baby Gap model if you ask me) and a few maternity photos as well. Don’t you love her cream dress with the greenery behind her?
And you know my sister brought her family! Maddox loves having his photo taken. Can you tell? He’s always so proud of himself when he sees it later. Good God, I’ve created a monster! A cute monster anyway.
Hazel is a ball of fire. The only time she sits still is when she’s eating or reading her books and even then you can catch her walking around the house doing either or both. We had daddy scoop her up and get all the snuggles for their sweet family shot.
The sofa I used in some of the photos is from Martha My Dear Rentals. Martha and her husband Brian started their rental business after they got married. They didn’t know what to do with it all of the items they bought to use in their wedding. So they decided to rent them to other couples. So smart! From there they have expanded to offer furniture, rugs, pillows, blankets, lighting, and more. Not only are they continuing to grow their business but they are growing their family as well. They welcomed their daughter Sadie into the world in October and I am proud to say I was able to photograph her newborn session. There will be a blog about my time with them very soon!
I have been photographing this Gucci glad family since their son Greyson was in the womb. Ashley is the ever-so-stylish mama and blogger of The Tiny Essentials. She makes looking good seem so easy. She will tell you it’s not easy but is totally worth the time and effort. Now I just need her to revamp my closet!
You may recognize the Philips family from my brand video we created years ago. Almost four years now! Lindsay was expecting their first, Tessa, and she her husband, Chris, allowed me to film their maternity and newborn session. Things have certainly changed over the past four years as they have continued to grow their family and welcomed their son into their home a few months ago. I sound like a broken record I’m sure, but I just love being able to photograph my families during these special times and watching them grow.
Daddy is always going to love looking back at this photo when his little girl was teeny-tiny and loved to dance with him on his toes. Gah, talk about perspective!
This little lady was full of joy and spunk. I wish I could share ALL the faces she made during our time together because they are outrageous. She scooted around that floor faster than I could chase her. It wasn’t great for her white tights but it was worth the laughs and ear-to-ear grins.
There are so many more photos that I will be sharing on social media in the days to come. I’ll be setting my dates for 2019’s minis in the spring so be on the look out. With only 12 sessions available for each they go fast so be sure to get on my mailing list so you will be the first to know!
Until then, I wish you all a very merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a joyful New Year!
